I'm trying to trade my almost new 4100 [170hrs] for a 4200 and I believe my local dealer is not giving me a good deal. My machine is FWD,Hydo,Loader,60"deck all JD. It is cleaner than the day it was delivered, not even a grass stain on the yellow deck or a chip in the paint, yet the dealer wants $9500. to trade for a comparably equipped 4200. He didn't even bother to look at it. It sits all waxed in my garage, he wouldn't have had to get cold to take a peek. Any ideas out there? Thank You, Don

Don,
Even if you felt that you are getting a good deal, you need a second opinion. First off..Reading scripture out of the "how to be a salemen" bible, I'd be willing to bet he's trying to test you out. For the guy who would have crumbled at that price...He just made himself a good buck on top of selling you a new unit. Secondly, OMO but sales seem to work a bit differently in agriculture. First, most Dealers have been around awhile and can afford to "play the game". Secondly, because they've been around awhile, they tend to forget that they aren't the only game in town..it is Y2k afterall....Just remember...Money talks and &*^% walks. Personally I would get a trade in # from a Kubota or Cub dealer..if for nothing else..as a reference point. You didn't mention your location? I'd be happy to put you in contact with our dealer...He'll give it straight up.. That's why I "selected" him. ....

Thank you, Michael, for your reply.I e-mailed a gentleman named Art that has a posting somewhere on this site. He sells for a NY dealer [my state] and has offered to work up a price on exactly the units you mentioned. I don't want to be taken advantage of, and I know I was when I traded my two year old Kabota to the JD dealer for the 4100. I'm not going to let it happen again. Don ....

Don,You always get your best prices when your selling a tractor out-right,instead of trying to trade. It sounds like you've got a very clean unit, and should'nt have any trouble moving it.All dealers are in the business for one reason,to make money. When you go shopping for a new compact, and you're talking cash prices, things start coming your way.We saved over $2800.00 last year by selling out-right and then working a deal on a new one, enough to cover the cost of a loader and some sales tax.I know trying to sell anything sometimes can be a pain in the rear, but with sites like this one that has a classified section, makes it a little easier. ....

Don,
Where in NY do you live? I also live in NY (Albany area)and have been in the market to purchase a JD 4100. maybe we could help each other out. We could probably get better deal from each other than from a dealer. Did you like the 4100? What did you use it for? Why the upgrade? I'm new to this tractor game so I am trying to absorb as much info as I can. Anyone think that I can get a different brand and it will do the same tasks as the 4100 for less money? Lee ....

As much as I'd like to get a bigger tractor, it just isn't practical. The 4100 is more than meeting our needs and therefore we will keep it. Sorry for the false alarm. ....
